  13. 6.11 Product update
  14. -------------------

  16. General information:
  17.     ->  NEW BBS NUMBER! The Thunderbyte support BBS in The Netherlands is
  18.         now a multi-line BBS, available via a new phone number:
  19.                     +31 - 59 - 182 011
  20.         (Dutch Residents, dial 059 182 011).
  21.         All lines are available through just this ONE number. We will keep
  22.         on adding lines until the occupancy of the BBS remains within
  23.         acceptable limits.

  25.     -   TBAV for DOS is now a NCSA certified product. The NCSA certifies
  26.         that TBAV (DOS) detects over 90% of NCSA Virus Library Version
  27.         9401. Exact score: 98.5%
  28.  
  29.         "It's without a doubt the fastest anti-virus that we have ever
  30.         seen!", according to Robert C. Bales, director of the National
  31.         Computer Security Association.
  32.  
  33.     -   Some third party signature files for TbScan are available on
  34.         some BBSes. If you want to use these signatures, keep in mind
  35.         that most of the new viruses are detected by the next release of
  36.         TbScan anyway. Also remember that we are not responsible for the
  37.         quality of these third party signatures. If you use them, you
  38.         are on your own.
  39.  
  40.     -   On some BBSes illegal key generators for TBAV can be found.
  41.         Our key system however is very complex. The keys contain a lot
  42.         of information, most of it is not being used right now. Once in
  43.         a while we take some new information of the keys, derived from
  44.         the registered name, and use it randomly in our product to
  45.         initialize scan tables or calculate signature wildcard lengths.
  46.         Since we haven't checked for these key values before, they are
  47.         guaranteed to be wrong in illegal keys. If the values are fake,
  48.         the scanner won't notice, but simply fail to detect most viruses.

  51. TBAV (menu shell):
  52.     -   NEW! In the main menu, you will find a new entry:
  53.         "Virus information"!
  54.         Here you can get a description of all viruses in the signature
  55.         file, their behavior, what kind of damage they perform, how to
  56.         clean them, etc. (The information is not available for
  57.         non-registered users).

  59.     -   If you press Escape on a text-prompt TBAV will no longer assume
  60.         that you don't want to alter the text, but assume that you want
  61.         to abort all menu's below it as well.

  64. TbScan:
  65.     -   TbScan was not always able to find a bootsector virus on a badly
  66.         damaged (and for DOS unreadable) disk. Now TbScan uses its own
  67.         low-level routines to locate a virus on an unreadable disk.

  69.     ->  If TbScan doesn't scan because of the 'once' option, it now
  70.         returns with errorlevel 0 (no viruses found, no errors).

  72.     ->  The unregistered version of TbScan now supports just 1 user
  73.         defined signature. This should be sufficient for evaluation
  74.         purposes, and reduces the amount of false alarms (and thus
  75.         support calls) from unregistered users.

  78. TbSetup:
  79.     -   Solved a bug of the 'alldrives' function, which could sometimes
  80.         cause non-existing drives to be processed.

  83. TbScanX:
  84.     -   Solved a bug in the EMS detection routine. With previous
  85.         versions it could occur that TbScanX tried to use EMS memory
  86.         when the EMS server had no swap segment available.
  87.  
  88.     -   Finally solved a bug in the XMS swap routine which caused
  89.         TbScanX to hang when the application's stack happened to be
  90.         in the XMS swap segment.
  91.  
  92.     -   Added a new switch: 'wild' (w). If you specify this switch,
  93.         TbScanX only searches for viruses which appear 'in the wild'.
  94.         All crap like laboratory viruses, viruses which require very
  95.         unlikely special environments, extremely obvious viruses,
  96.         garbage, etc. will not be searched for. This is the default
  97.         behavior of most other resident virus scanners anyway. It saves
  98.         a lot of memory and increases the scanning speed.

  101. TbGenSig:
  102.     -   Changed because of the encoded virus information embedded in the
  103.         signature file.

  105.     -   Solved a bug in the counting of user defined signatures.
  106.  
  107.     -   Solved a bug causing the algorithmic detection routines to be
  108.         skipped when user defined signatures were added.

  111. TbUtil:
  112.     -   Added a new sub-option of option 'immunize': 'batch' (ba).
  113.         If you specify this option, TbUtil will not prompt to
  114.         insert a disk but assume that a disk has already been
  115.         inserted.

  117.     -   Solved a bug in the TBAV partition code causing the Int 13h
  118.         check to fail in some cases.

  121.     -   Adding support to immunize the secondary harddisk. Instead of
  122.         'immunize c:' you may also specify 'immunize 1:' (for the first
  123.         harddisk) or 'immunize 2:' to immunize the second physical disk.

  127.     -   Increased the detection of direct disk writes.

  131. Viruses:
  132.     -   Re-organized the High-Level-Language virus signatures.
  133.         High-Level-Language viruses are viruses written not in - as
  134.         usual - assembly language, but in another language. These
  135.         viruses now all have the prefix 'HLL'. The prefix may be
  136.         extended to indicate the nature of the virus: C = Companion, O =
  137.         Overwriting. This naming scheme is according to the CARO naming
  138.         convention.
  139.  
  140.     -   Also added detection for some 'garbage' files. These files do
  141.         not contain viruses at all, but unfortunately, for some reason
  142.         beyond our comprehension, they are used in some scanner tests. To
  143.         avoid an undeserved penalty, we have to detect this garbage too.
